Make A Glass Fridge
Magnetic Holder

A glass fridge magnetic holder made from stacked fusing glass with a fiber paper carved recess for the magnet.

The techniques used for this glass fridge magnetic holder can be applied to a wide range of art glass fridge magnets.

A variety of different size magnets can be obtained from craft shops and online suppliers.

Due to its weight, oversize glass may not be suitable for small magnets, the magnet will have difficulty in gripping a metal surface strongly.

Spectrum 96 glass has been used for this example. Bullseye glass can be also be used.

Fusing Supplies:

A piece of black, yellow and blue fusing glass.

Magnet, a 5/8 inch diameter by 1/8 inch thick.

Fiber paper 1/8 inch thick.

Glass cutter.

White glue.

Two-part epoxy.

Prepared kiln shelf.

Glass fusing kiln.

To make the fridge magnet proceed as follows:

Step 1. Cut a one inch square of black fusing glass.A three quarter inch square of white glass and a halt inch square of yellow glass.

Step 2. Place magnet on fiber paper and draw around magnet with marking pen.

Step 3. Cut around shape with a pair of scissors.

Step 4. Put a drop of white glue in center of black glass and place fiber circle on glue.

Step 5. Stack white and yellow glass on black glass and place on kiln shelf.

Step 6. Put kiln shelf in glass fusing kiln. Bring temperature up to around 1000°F (538° C), if using thin fire paper keep glass kiln vented until binders have burnt away.

Step 7. Bring temperature up to about 1500°F (816° C). Hold for ten minutes.

Check progress, if fully fused switch fusing kiln off and allow to cool to room temperature.

Step 8. The fiber circle will have carved a recess in the glass to hold the magnet.

Remove fiber paper and use some sand paper to roughen up inside the recess.

Step 9. Mix a small amount of two-part epoxy and apply to the glass, place magnet in recess and allow to dry.

Once the epoxy has set the glass magnet is ready to use.

This fusing method can be applied to a variety of shapes and sizes.
