Glass Powder Coated Fusing Glass Pendant Fired At High Temperature

Fusing a glass powder coated pendant in a glass fusing kiln at high temperature to create an abstract glass powder design. High glass kiln temperatures will cause color shifts and the colors to run resulting in an original piece of kiln formed glass art. Different fusing glass shapes and colored base glasses will produce a large variety glass powder coated pendants. Care needs to be taken with this process to ensure the glass kiln does not overheat. Monitor the firing, bubbles just below the surface will sometimes appear in the glass at high temperature. Green glass has been used for the pendant but other fusing glass colors can be used to deepen the powdered glass colors. Clear or transparent colored glasses can also be used to create very original fused glass designs. The paint techniques used can be modified to suit you tastes, the glass powder for this pendant was applied with cocktail sticks. A small paint brush can also be used to apply the glass powder. Using small squeeze bottles the glass powder can be applied directly to the glass and swirled with a paint brush or cocktail stick. By varying and mixing paint powders a very large color palette can be used. You will need the following items to make the pendant: Two pieces of green fusing glass. Selection of colored glass powder. Squeeze bottles/paint brush/cocktail sticks. Aloe Vera or glass medium for mixing. Glass cutter. Thin fire paper or kiln washed shelf. Face mask. Glass fusing kiln. Instructions: Step 1. Cut two pieces of glass to the desired shape and size. Cut the top piece slightly larger so that it will fuse over the top of the bottom layer. Step 2.Wearing your face mask, mix the powder, water and aloe gel as per the instructions given for glass powder painting. Step 3. Follow the painting instructions and paint the top layer. Step 4. Allow the glass powder to dry completely. Step 5. Position painted glass on top of bottom layer, place on kiln shelf and put in warm glass kiln. Step 6. Bring fusing temperature up gradually to 1600° F(870° C), hold for 15 minutes. Check the glass as the temperature increases, if necessary, adjust temperature before the top temperature is reached.. Monitor temperatures to ensure that the kiln does not overheat. Switch glass kiln off once ideal outcome is achieved. Step 7. Allow glass to cool to room temperature and remove from kiln. Apply bail of your choice to rear of glass powder coated pendant with two part epoxy adhesive.
