Fused Crackle Glass
Pendant

Simulated fused crackle glass is fired in a fusing kiln to produce a crackle finish.

Using different size glasses and colored powder a simulated crackle finish can be achieved.

The basis of this technique is the use of colored frit powders, different colors can be used to produce varying results.

Either COE 90 or COE 96 can be used for this project.

The completed item is pendant size but larger pieces can be made.

Fusing Materials:

  • Clear Fusing glass
  • Blue and white glass powder
  • One piece 1/8" thick fiber paper
  • One piece of thinfire paper
  • Sifter
  • Cutter
  • Fusing kiln
  • Small spray bottle
  • Face mask

(Always wear a face mask when working with glass powder)

Assembly & Fusing:

Step 1. Cut two pieces of fusing clear 2 1/4" x 1 1/4".

Step 2.  Sift an even layer of blue powder about 1/8" thick onto the fiber paper. Spray a light covering of water.

Step 4. When it is almost dry, about 15 minutes, gently move the fiber paper around until cracks appear in the powder. Hold the paper with fingers underneath and gently bend to produce more cracks.

If very few cracks appear, place clear on powder and gently move around.

Do not drag across the surface.

When moving the clear, cracks may not be evident but will show up during the fusing stage.

Step 5. Place glass on powder and cap with clear second piece. Position fiber paper on shelf and put in fusing kiln.

Bring up reasonably quickly to fusing temperature. A series of "cracks" should now appear.

Step 6. When satisfied, switch off and allow to cool to room temperature.

Remove from kiln.

Place thinfire paper on shelf, sift a thick layer of white onto the thinfire paper place pendant on powder and gently press down.

Step 7. Put shelf into kiln and bring up to fusing temperature quickly.

Once powder has melted into the "cracks" switch off and cool to room temperature and then remove from kiln.

Contrasting colors may be sifted onto the fiber paper to produce varying effects. This process may be used on coasters and small plates.
